The weekend of March 18-20 was the first hurdle for collegiate bowlers to make their dreams come true. The IBC sectionals were held around the country and I covered the tournament at Holiday Bowl-Brainerd in Chattanooga , Tennessee . The center has 15 year old Brunswick Anvilane lane beds, which were in pretty good shape for a high linage center. The conditioner was Prodigy and we used Fizzion for the lane cleaner. Each of the sectionals used a Kustodien Plus.

The tournament is divided into two parts. It begins with a singles tournament where the top four from each sectional will go to Milwaukee in mid May for the Collegiate Singles Championship. This tournament filled the house as 79 men and 56 women battled for the chance to move on. We were instructed to have a totally different pattern for both tournaments. We choose a pattern that we had used in the Commonwealth Games that was 43 feet long and should have been played inside the track area. In my region, I was told not to discuss any of the particulars of the patterns with any of the players and coaches so everyone would have an equal chance. The results are below and congratulations to Matthew and Stacey on winning this event:

MEN

WOMEN

1.

Matthew Sims

1455

1.

Stacey Wyatt

1355

2.

Mike Hoffman

1447

2.

Kayla Bandy

1310

3.

Anthony La Caze

1432

3.

Patricia Trusty

1281

4.

Andrew Owens

1370

4.

Nancy Lewandowski

1264

The team event had 13 men's teams and 12 women's teams trying to advance to the finals that will be held in April in Rockford Illinois . Only the top four in each division will move on. Since the lane surface is 15 years old we were able to use the new Sport Bowling rule for conditioning which is 2 1/2 to 1 between the center boards (18 to 18) and the outside boards of the lane (3-7). The pattern was 38 feet long and most of the players started either trying to feed the track or playing up the outside boards. Congratulations to Pikeville College for winning both male and female ends of the qualifier.

MEN

WOMEN

1.

Pikeville

12765

1.

Pikeville

12369

2.

Saginaw Valley

12657

2.

McKendree

11944

3.

Kansas

12622

3.

Kansas

11935

4.

Toledo

12358

4.

Purdue

11356

INTERCOLLEGIATE BOWLING CHAMPIONSHIPS SECTIONAL

INTERCOLLEGIATE BOWLING
CHAMPIONSHIPS SECTIONAL

Parkway Lanes, Allentown, PN

By: Adam Easter

Doing the IBC sectional again this year was a privilege for me. I always look forward to doing the lanes for the IBC sectional. This year the IBC sectional was in a different location, which made my trip more interesting. After making sure everything was prepared to go, I was ready to embark on my journey.

I started off my trip late Wednesday night by driving to the airport. I left at this time, as I am not accustomed to waking up at 4 a.m. and did not want to miss my flight. I arrived in Allentown and got settled in. After eating lunch, I drove around the town a little bit to get comfortable in my surroundings. I was on my way to the bowling center to check out the lanes and meet the personnel, when I found out my machine wasn't there. I did everything I could do by phone to make sure it was there as early as possible on Friday. Everything checked out and the machine would arrive first thing Friday morning. After dealing with the machine arrival, I checked in with the center personnel and made arrangements to get in the next morning.

The machine arrived on time Friday morning and everything ran perfect out of the box. I then prepared the lanes for the singles championship. The shot was not super easy, however the bowlers made it look easy. There was one 300, one 299, and a couple 275 + games. The leading average for the men was a 243. Ryan Ciminelli of Erie Community College had a total pin fall of 1459 (259 over) for 6 games. The top average for the women was 220. Teresa Perkins of Western New England College had a total pin fall of 1320 (120 over) for 6 games. I would like to congratulate the top four finishers for the men and women who will go on to compete at the national tournament.

MEN

WOMEN

1.

Ryan Ciminelli

1459

1.

Teresa Perkins

1320

2.

Thomas Scherrer

1443

2.

Amanda Beck

1314

3.

Matthew Deuire

1425

3.

Mandy Pezzano

1313

4.

William Goulette

1377

4.

Stefanie Nation

1279

The team events started on Saturday at 8 a.m. I needed to get into the bowling center at 1 a.m. to get the lanes done in time. I had to allot myself extra time because I had to read the tapes to make sure the team pattern was Sport compliant. The tapes were fine, so I did not have to make any adjustments and the rest of my job was easy. After finishing the lanes, I watched a little bit of bowling. The shot was different than the singles event, with the team shot being more challenging. This was evident after watching one game and seeing the margin of error was much less on the team event.

Everything seemed all right, so I went back to my room to get some rest. After resting I went back to pull tapes and watch the rest of the matches. I went out to eat and get a little more rest before I had to return Sunday morning. I returned to the bowl around 1 a.m. to do the lanes again. Everything went fine and I loaded the machine up to be shipped back to Kegel. I watched some bowling and the lanes seemed fine. I had a plane to catch so I was unable to finish watching the rest of the tournament but I would like to congratulate the winners.

MEN

WOMEN

1.

Central Florida

12713

1.

Morehead State

11923

2.

Erie CC

12605

2.

Central Florida

11747

3.

Morehead State

12315

3.

Penn State

10872

4.

Vincennes

12186

4.

Erie CC

10828

I would like to thank all of the staff at Parkway Lanes for their help. Fairview Heights is about 15 miles east of St. Louis, in the west-central part of Illinois. The bowling center is a little off the beaten path but has hosted their share of major events. The 2005 Illinois State Women's Championships are to be held later this year, and they have hosted both PBA and PWBA events. It is a 50-lane center, very attractive inside, and the staff there was excellent. I felt very welcomed.

This year, a singles event was held prior to the traditional Baker style team competition. The singles event was well attended with 92 men and 57 women participating. A non Sport Bowling compliant pattern was used for this event. It was the same pattern used for the 2005 Commonwealth Games. The lanes were stripped and conditioned separately and all 50 lanes were used for this event. For the tournament this year, we used Prodigy lane conditioner and Fizzion lane cleaner.

The scoring pace was quite good with 49% of the men and 14% of the women averaging over 200 for the six game competition. Top score for the men was Timothy Behrendt from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a score of 1396 or 196 over. The women's winner was Ariel Givens from the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore with a score of 1390 or 190 over. The top four of each of the men and women will advance to the national finals. It took 1366 to make the top four for the men and 1296 for the women.

MEN

WOMEN

1.

Timothy Behrendt

1396

1.

Ariel Givens

1390

2.

Justin Stewart

1385

2.

Jessica Lesagonicz

1344

3.

Benjamin Goede

1381

3.

Sandra Dekoj

1302

4.

Dave Lughermo

1366

4.

Jonica Matson

1296

Conditioning for the team competition began at 2:30 a.m. Saturday. Only 36 lanes had to be done since there were 11 women's teams and 15 men's teams competing in this sectional. I thought I was making great time as I had most of the lanes stripped by 3:05 a.m. Little did I know that my watch had stopped and it was actually 4:20 a.m. So much for finishing early! Anyway, when it was all said and done, even though the tournament was not sanctioned as such, the condition met the criteria to be Sport Bowling compliant.

Competition began promptly at 8:15 a.m. Surprisingly, at least to me, the men were not starting out very deep. In past competitions I had seen them starting around the 15 board at the arrows and ending up extremely deep by the end of the day. For this group, the average target for the first two games was around the 9-13 board at the arrows with not too much launch angle. The ball seldom went outside the 7 board at the break point. More predictably, the women started out further outside, with an average target of the 6-10 board at the arrows and virtually 0-degree launch angle. One notable exception was the top seeded Wichita State women. They shot 278 in their second game with 4 out of 5 players on the team playing outside of the 5 board!

By the time the teams got to the last few games of day one, the men had generally moved pretty deep. The more successful ones were playing around the 20-25 board at the arrows and not letting the ball go outside the 10 board at the break point. The women seemed to be more spread out in their choice of how to play the lanes. The average seemed to be around the 12-18 board at the arrows, but many were both inside and outside this area. The women seemed to be struggling more at the end of the day than the men.

After 32 Baker games, the Wichita State women had a commanding lead over the rest of the field. They were the only women's team to average 200 for the 32 games with a total of 6442, and were more than 500 pins ahead of their nearest rival, Lindenwood University, with a total of 5891. Rounding out the top four for the women were University of Maryland-Eastern Shore with a total of 5841, and University of Nebraska-Omaha with a total of 5746.

On the men's side the field was much tighter. Leading after the first day of competition was University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a score of 6645. Less than 100 pins behind was Wichita State with a score of 6565. Lindenwood University was in third with a score of 6492, and rounding out the top four was Indiana University with a score of 6444.

Sunday morning was pretty much a repeat of Saturday, with cleaning and conditioning running smoothly. The lanes were done by 7:00 a.m. and competition began at 7:45 a.m. Since I had to pack up my equipment to send back to Kegel, then had to catch a flight home, I was not able to see any of Sunday's competition. We also determine the parameters of the pattern to be used; to comply with this tournament the pattern was Sport Bowling Compliant.

I arrived in San Jose on the 17 th of March and drove to AMF Oakridge Lanes. Once I arrived and met the staff, they showed me the area they set aside for all of my equipment. That night I met with the tournament director and all of the coaches to go over the pattern being used and field any question they might have.

Before the sectional tournament began, there was a singles tournament. The top four men and top four women in the singles tournament will move on to compete in the Collegiate Singles Championship Tournament. Congratulations to the following competitors:

MEN

WOMEN

1.

Phil Campit

1447

1.

Corina Shiver

1272

2.

P.J. Thanks in part to Tom Barger and his staff at Oakridge Lanes, and Steve Lawton and his daughter for handling the tournament director's duties. Finally, thank you to Bob Fields (aka Cord Man) and his wife Gloria for dinner Friday before the Tournament.
