"The crisis is upon us, friends. Our sport is in trouble. Many of you, that love the game as we do, will look at the crisis like a friend who is in trouble and needs our help. We must not shrink from the task before us, we should welcome it. It is 'our' generation that has been called to the challenge. If not now, when? If not us, who?"

Summer is almost here
The summer season is nearly upon us. For many, that means family vacations and rest and relaxation. But for bowling, that means trade shows, tournaments and maybe even time for center renovations.
International Bowl Expo is right around the corner (as of this writing, about one month away). Here you can find everything your center needs from lanes and pinsetters, scoring equipment, lights and sound to food, beverage and bar items and literally everything in between. There are also seminars and educational events aplenty. Mechanics, proprietors, pro shop operators and coaches alike are sure to find something valuable at IBE 2011.
This year’s edition of Bowl Expo is being held in the Dallas-Fort Worth area; right around the corner from the new International Training and Research Center and the Bowling Hall of Fame. Registrants that pay the full registration fee get a ticket to the Training and Research center for the “Night at the Campus” event. Additionally, full registration is eligible for a ticket to the US Women’s Open which is being hosted at nearby AMF Humble. The finals are being staged at the all new Cowboy’s Stadium. So, not only will you have one stop shopping for your center, you can take part in some pretty cool events.
Now if summer means vacation for you, perhaps your vacation will include bowling. The USBC Open Championships are still underway in Reno and the USBC Women’s Championships are going strong in Syracuse. The USBC Youth Open and Junior Gold tournaments will be in Las Vegas. Of course, there is the US Women’s Open as well. Not to mention some of the mega-buck tournaments like the Mini and the High Roller.
No matter where your summer takes you, there’s plenty happening in bowling. And even if you aren’t travelling for bowling, hit your local bowling center with your family. It’s a great way to spend some quality time together while being a little competitive and beating the summer heat!
Williams, Allen shatter PABCON doubles record
By Lucas Wiseman; USBC Communications
GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Team USA's Walter Ray Williams Jr. and Patrick Allen didn't just break the all-time Pan American Bowling Confederation Men's Championships record in doubles on Tuesday, they blew past it with ease.
Williams and Allen combined to shoot a six-game total of 2,917, an average of 243.08, at Bolerama Tapatio, eclipsing the previous record of 2,788 set in 2009 by their teammates Chris Barnes and Tommy Jones.
Allen led the pair with 1,461, while Williams contributed 1,456 in the winning effort. Canada's Dan MacLelland and Michael Schmidt took the silver medal with 2,742, while Puerto Rico's Bruno Diaz and Andro Simounet earned the bronze with 2,720.
The Americans entered the final doubles block knowing they needed a big performance after their teammates were out of medal contention from the morning session.
"After the performance this morning, we knew it was either us or nobody for a medal," Allen said. "It was just time for us to rise to the occasion so the team didn't get shut out."
The gold medalists got out of the gate fast with Williams starting with games of 298 and 278, while Allen opened with 247 and 233. They eventually pulled away from the Canadians in the final two games.
"I was surprised the scores weren't higher on the first block, but I knew there were still some pretty good bowlers on our squad," said Williams, who opened the block with 11 straight strikes before leaving the 2-8. "Fortunately, I had a real good look early on and Patrick bowled well, too."
Team USA's Mike Fagan, who also opened the day with a 298 game, and Wes Malott finished doubles in 10th place with 2,578. Barnes and Bill O'Neill were 11th with 2,576.
With two events to go in the all-events race, Allen leads the field with 2,810 for 12 games, an average of 234.17. MacLelland is second with 2,802, while Colombia's Manuel Otalora is third with 2,753.
As for the rest of the Americans, Williams is fifth, Fagan is sixth, Barnes is 10th, O'Neill is 11th and Malott sits in 18th. The top 16 players in all-events after 24 games advance to Friday's final event, the match-play Masters.
Action shifts to the trios event Wednesday morning with Barnes, Fagan and O'Neill teaming up and Malott, Allen and Williams joining forces for the United States.
The PABCON Men's Championships features teams in the American Zone competing in five-player team, trios, doubles, singles, all-events and match-play Masters.

Team USA takes gold, silver in trios at PABCON
By: Lucas Wiseman; USBC Communications
GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Team USA's Bill O'Neill, Mike Fagan and Chris Barnes broke the all-time Pan American Bowling Confederation Men's Championships trios record en route to the gold medal Wednesday.
The Americans totaled 4,179 for six games, an average of 232.17, while competing on dual lane conditions. The 44-foot London pattern was on the left lane, while the 34-foot Stockholm pattern was on the right lane at Bolerama Tapatio.
O'Neill led the way with 1,560, an average of 260, and was followed by Barnes' 1,330 and Fagan's 1,289. The other Team USA squad of Walter Ray Williams Jr., Patrick Allen and Wes Malott earned the silver medal with 4,035. Canada took the bronze with 3,936.
"Our first couple days here were pretty rough, but we're pretty smart and once we see a pattern for six games, we know what it takes out there," said O'Neill, who helped the trio break the record of 4,024 set by Team USA in 1989. "We've gotten more comfortable with this bowling center, and we utilized one of our biggest strengths, which is communication."
Team USA got off to a strong start as O'Neill began the squad with 11 straight strikes before leaving the 2-4-5-8 on his final shot for a 296 game. Barnes added 230 and Fagan shot 215.
"There are so many great bowlers here, and we just wanted to get our foot on the gas and get going," O'Neill said. "It was nice to throw the ball well today."
Malott led the other Team USA trio with 1,388, while Allen shot 1,348 and Williams had 1,299 as they finished nearly 100 pins ahead of the Canadians.
Dan MacLelland led the Canadian effort with 1,363 and was joined by Michael Schmidt (1,321) and George Lambert (1,252).

PBA stars head to Chicago for GEICO PBA Team Shootout
ESPN-televised summer series at 10pin bowling lounge is first Chicago PBA event in 47 years
A unique showcase blending the highest level of talent with the hottest trends in the recreational side of the sport will take place over Memorial Day weekend when 20 of the world's greatest bowlers return to downtown Chicago for a unique team competition at upscale 10pin bowling lounge in the landmark Marina City complex.
The GEICO PBA Team Shootout, the fifth annual PBA Summer Series special event, will result in more than 15 hours of national television on ESPN and ESPN2 over the summer months. It will be the first appearance by PBA players in Chicago proper in 47 years.
"The return of team bowling to the heart of the city where many of the greatest names in bowling history built their careers will present the sport in an entirely new light," said Professional Bowlers Association Deputy Commissioner Tom Clark.
The GEICO PBA Team Shootout, with the PBA Manufacturers Cup as its ultimate prize, will be conducted in a "boutique" bowling facility that calls House of Blues its next-door-neighbor and includes a Who's Who list of Chicago celebrities and business leaders among its clients.
10pin bowling lounge has hosted hundreds of special events, including high-profile fundraisers conducted by Chicago Cubs pitching star Kerry Wood, Chicago Bears defensive lineman Israel Idonije, Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook and Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, a Chicago native, among others.
The GEICO PBA Team Shootout will feature four teams of five PBA stars who will compete in a variety of singles, doubles and team matches, earning points toward the PBA Manufacturers Cup for their respective sponsoring companies. It will be the first PBA Tour event held in Chicago since the former Bowlium hosted the 1963 Chicago Coca-Cola Open when the PBA Tour was only five years old.
Reigning PBA Manufacturers Cup winner Storm Products will defend its title against teams representing bowling ball manufacturing rivals Brunswick, Ebonite International and 900 Global.
The special PBA Summer Series event will get underway with an upscale pro-am program on May 29 when Chicagoland league bowlers will be invited to bowl with PBA stars and Chicago sports celebrities for fun and prizes in a 9-pin no-tap event.
Entry fees are $99 for the 2 p.m. squad and $125 for the special 6 p.m. "dinner" squad. Entry fees include free parking. All pro-am bowlers will compete for cash and merchandise prizes. For complete entry details, visit pba.com for a direct-entry link through e-Tix or call 206-654-6003.
The GEICO Team Shootout will feature a series of matches between the company teams on Tuesday and Wednesday lead up to a "Baker format" team stepladder final. In Baker team competition, all five players on each team will bowl two frames each to complete a full game. The winning team will claim the Manufacturers Cup.

TEAM USA WINS TEAM AND ALL-EVENTS “GOLD”
GUADALAJARA, Mexico - The Team USA men overcame a close battle with Puerto Rico to claim the gold medal in the coveted five-player team event at the 2011 Pan American Bowling Confederation (PABCON) Men's Championships. The U.S. won the gold medal with a six-game total of 6,772, an average of 224.07, to top Puerto Rico's 6,642 at Bolerama Tapatio. Canada took home the bronze medal with 6,584.
Team USA's Bill O'Neill, who won the all-events gold medal, struck on his first two shots in the final frame of the final game to shut out Puerto Rico, which still had hope with a couple players left to finish. "The team put me in the anchor position and expected me to come up with big shots when we needed it," said O'Neill, who won the all-events gold with a 24-game total of 5,596, an average of 233.17. "For me, throwing shots when I've needed them over the past year has been a bit of a struggle. So it felt really good to make some shots at the end to lock it up."
O'Neill led the team effort with 1,398 and was followed by Mike Fagan (1,377), Patrick Allen (1,351), Chris Barnes (1,304), Walter Ray Williams Jr. (647) and Wes Malott (645).
"There's no doubt that the talent in the American Zone has gotten stronger and that showed today," Barnes said. "It's always a good feeling when you get in a close situation and win. The bottom line is when it came down to the last game, we bowled well enough to pull it out while everyone was scrambling."
Entering the final game, Canada trailed the United States by 40 pins, while Puerto Rico was 43 pins off the lead. The Canadians faded in the final game, but the Puerto Ricans held strong down the stretch and nearly pulled off the upset. Francisco Colon led Puerto Rico with 1,376 and was followed by Andro Simounet (1,345), Israel Hernandez (1,334), Bruno Diaz (1,327) and Francisco Valient (1,260).
In the all-events race, O'Neill entered the final game down 29 pins to Canada's Dan MacLelland, but O'Neill outscored him 249-184 in the final game. MacLelland took the silver medal with 5,560, while Colombia's Manuel Otalora earned bronze with 5,534.
The top 16 players in the final all-events standings advanced to Friday's match-play Masters, the final event of the PABCON Men's Championships. All six Team USA players advanced along with four Canadians and three Puerto Ricans to make up 13 of the 16 spots.
The PABCON Men's Championships features teams in the American Zone competing in five-player team, trios, doubles, singles, all-events and match-play Masters.

Canadian MacLelland beats Mexico's Cruz for PABCON Men's Championships Masters gold
Dan MacLelland of Canada defeated local favorite Alejandro Cruz, Mexico, two-games-to-none, to end the 2011 PABCON Men's Championships with victory in match-play Masters at Bolerama Tapatío in Guadalajara, Jalisco, México.
The Canadian, who competes on the Lumber Liquidators Professional Bowlers Association Tour, won 269-203 and 224-175.
Team USA's Bill O'Neill and Chris Barnes shared the bronze medal. Both lost in the best-of-three games semifinals at Bolerama Tapatio. Cruz took down O'Neill, 2-0, while Barnes lost 2-0 to MacLelland.
"We had a good run this week, and it's hard to be too disappointed," said O'Neill, who won the all-events gold medal. "This format is a total crapshoot and for us to get a couple medals is OK. We're always disappointed when we don't win, but we brought home the gold in the important events."
Cruz, who earned Mexico its first medal of the Championships, struck out in the first game to beat O'Neill, 225-223, and then rolled to a 268-227 win for the sweep.
"I always like bowling against the crowd favorite," O'Neill said. "It's fun when you win that match as an underdog, but unfortunately I wasn't able to come out on top this time."
In the other semifinal, MacLelland, who earned the all-events silver medal, took the opening game, 257-223, and then claimed the second game, 255-212.
